very attractive, classy, somewhat retro watch. all my watches before this one have been pilot chronos, and i wanted something a little less cluttered and more refined for the occasions i need something a bit dressy. this watch fits the bill perfectly. for those worried about the size, be aware that

” it ‘wears’ MUCH smaller than the 40mm case diameter would suggest. im not sure why, but it looks positively TINY, and i didnt believe it was actually 40mm until i placed it directly on top of one of my other 40mm watches. even side by side, it looks much smaller.

speaking of size… if your wrist is even a little bit larger than average, get ready to buy a new band (which you might want to do anyway, this is not a great band, unfortunately)… my wrist is SLIGHTLY larger than average, but this is the first time i have ever had a watch band that BARELY fits. it is uncomfortable even on the last hole in the band… all my other watches, ive needed to take links out, or wear them somewhere in the middle holes, so this band seems inordinately small to me. i have a barton leather strap with rose gold hardware to match the watch on order to replace it.

This is my first Orient. Read a million positive reviews of these things, but I’m a little underwhelmed. The watch is completely adequate, it’s just nothing special. When I hold it in my hand I don’t feel like I got an especially good deal for $130, which isn’t saying much, considering how reasonabl

“le this is for a watch. It says it’s Stainless Steel, but feels like plated brass. The winding action on the crown isn’t particularly satisfying, but it pulls out and adjusts just fine. Mine was +16 secs out of the box, and easily adjusted to +2, which is quite good for a watch this price. But, overall, reminds me of a Russian watch half it’s price, certainly a notch or two below as a Seiko or even say an Invicta Pro Diver (Seiko movement).

So, if you’re curious and find it attractive, I can’t really fault it for the money–it’s just nothing special.”

I do think the brushing and polishing looks good but otherwise, I personally would not recommend this watch. For a little bit more money, you could get the Tissot Le Locle and I think that watch is night and day compared to this watch.

I relied on the product description when purchasing this watch and unfortunately the band is not 9 inches long. I have an 8 inch in circumference wrist so at a minimum a 9 inch band works for me. The outer box it came in was dirty and sticky to the touch which leaves the presentation as less than desirable if you were to give this as a gift I was really attracted to the dial on this watch but again, the band size listed in the specs is not correct and mine came in a dirty box with no plastic protecting the dial. I am disappointed to say the least.

This is the second G Shock that I’ve owned, the first being the GA-100 military (black). It was an OK watch. Definitely bulletproof and after a year since it’s last battery change it’s only a minute fast. But its hard to read, plain and the fact that 1 in 5 people seem to have it kind of turned me o

“off of it. So I moved on to a nice mechanical field watch. The problem that I personally had with the mechanical watch was that it did not keep exact time and my OCD had me adjusting it several times a week. The more I messed with it the more it bothered me and the more opportunities I created to damage the watch. And I did. Three times.

So giving up on the mechanical and not wanting to wear the GA-100 as my daily wearer I had a few requirements for my next watch. 1. Had to be able to handle every day wear and occasional hard use sometimes for extended periods (military deployments). 2. Quartz movement for more accurate time keeping vs. A Mechanical watch. And finally 3.quickly and easily read.

So I performed a few Google searches for best tactical/military watch (military watches are generally designed with my 3 requirements in mind) and I kept seeing the Rangeman on every single list. A little more research and I found that the Rangeman met and exceeded all of my requirements so I bought it.

It’s day 3 now so here are my thoughts on the G-shock rangeman:

Pros:

-bang for buck- cheaper than the other watches in the Masters of G collection yet get nearly all of the same perks offered in the other watches.

-Atomic time keeping- so far it has synced every night with the Atomic time signal… This is a major perk for me after owning a mechanical.

– backlight- evenly lights up the display and can be set for 1.5 sec, 3 seconds and auto. Major improvement over the GA-100.

– solar charging- the main hesitation for me on getting a quartz watch was replacing the battery… Most companies void the warranty if you open the watch or have a random jeweler do it for you. Plus at a certain point I would wonder when it was going to fail but feel like I was being wasteful for replacing a battery before it died. I don’t have to worry about that now. Watch arrived full charge and leaving it in a windowsill for half a day in sunlight once a month maintains the charge. Not hard at all, and the battery will last a decade or more.

– toughness/looks- its a G shock so I won’t have to worry about durability the way I did with other watches. To me it looks better than most g shocks and is roughly the same size as the GA-100 so I knew it wouldn’t look oversized on my wrist.

-triple sensor- not really going to use them so they are icing on the cake and neat to play with and if I do end up needing them they are there.

Cons

– Atomic time keeping is great if you live in an area covered by it… And most places are. But the further you live from the transmitter, geography, tall buildings etc. Effect the watches ability to receive the signal. So keep that in mind and do a little research if you are counting on this feature. It won’t work in Hawaii, Alaska or in the middle of a big city that great. Also make sure if you intend on using this feature to turn the storm warning off… It overrides the auto sync.

-it’s not the biggest Gshock out there but it isn’t small and may make you look like you are over compensating if you have a smaller frame.

-a lot of people complain about the triple sensor and that’s because largely people don’t really understand what they are getting.
— barometer and attitude need calibrated/reset a lot to be useful and in general should always be used against another reference. Remember the saying 2 is 1 and 1 is none? Same principle with this watch. They are only accurate to an extent and if you aren’t moving. The watch calculates altitude off of absolute pressure and gets its info from the barometer. Changes in weather affects it easily. So recalibrate often if you need to use it and otherwise it’s just a neat feature reference. If you can’t be bothered to stay in one place and calibrate often then don’t get mad that it isn’t accurate.

The compass can be affected by your house, wifi signals, your phone etc. Keep it away from stuff and calibrate often for accuracy.

Temp- saw a lot of people complain about this as well… It can be calibrated for use on your wrist to compensate for your body heat. Get an accurate reference and calibrate it.

-weight- the Rangeman is not a light watch. I was used to very light watches before so I really noticed this on the wrist. It’s day 3 of wearing it and it’s just now getting to the point where I forget it’s there. So keep that in mind.

Overall I really enjoy this watch, and with proper care I think I’ll be wearing it for a very long time. I absolutely would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is interested in it.

I spent a good amount of time deciding between this model and the negative display ‘japan’ model. I couldn’t justify the massive price tag increase for just the negative display and a carbon fiber band so I went with this model. One month of 24/7 use and I’m very pleased. “o read and the functions are fairly easy to access once you get the hang of it. Accuracy is near perfect with nightly atomic updates. My watch was delivered with the battery indicator in the medium position. I left the watch in the window for several hours at it has not come down off of the high battery level since.

The reason for my deduction of one star is twofold. First, the thermometer picks up on your body heat throwing the reading off by 20 degrees or more. That is understandable but it takes an hour or more for the temp. to normalize after taking the watch off. Second, the illumination only has two settings one second and 3 second on. The biggest problem with this is if you want to flip through the features in the dark the light turns off with every press of a button. This means you are constantly turning the illumination on to see where you are and it turning off as soon as you hit another button. I would like to see the watch stay on for another 3 seconds after a button is depressed not turn off. Also, another pet peeve is that the illumination only comes from the left of the bezel so it is naturally brighter than the right side. For $200 I’d like to see more symmetrical lighting but it doesn’t hinder the ability to read.

Being solar powered I am really hoping this watch will last 10 years or more. My last watch, a luminox, died after just 3 years of use. I will continue to update this review as I see fit.
—————————————————————
7-14-17 Update
Still wearing the watch everyday and have not taken it off yet. I’ve since taken the watch off power saver mode and have yet to have the battery meter decline. Still wish the illumination would stay on an additional 3 seconds after a button is pressed.

—————————————————————
1/9/18 Update:

Watch still working flawlessly and have yet to take it off. I’ve really come to love the barometer function as you can see when the weather is going to deteriorate. For example on a camping trip with no cell service prior to going to bed I noticed the barometer graph trending downward. As a precaution we covered everything up and sure enough it rained that night! No issues whatsoever thus far
————————————————————

7/20/18 Update:
Still loving this watch! Despite wearing everyday since receiving there are no major scratches to the display just extremely minor imperfections. No issues with syncing to the atomic clock every night as long as the watch is being worn. For some reason if it is not on it will not update on the east coast. I have also went through my first break down and deep clean. Just a small screwdriver a old toothbrush and some tooth paste had the watch looking like it was brand new again. Still yet to have the watch dip below the fully charged meter on then display
————————————————————

5/7/19 Update:
Everything is operating perfectly and still yet to go under the full charge. Have some wear on the steel clasp but that is expected with 2 years of daily use. No issues whatsoever with daily showers and pool use from time to time. Band is holding up well and I’m pleased I have not had to replace it as my previous Luminox band broke annually. Will continue to update
————————————————————
9/9/19 Update:
After 2.5 years of continual use the resin band failed at the clasp. Luckily I noticed before losing the watch. Replacement band on amazon was about $50 which is extremely pricy. Hopefully will get longer use out of the new band. Picture attached of failed band
————————————————————
6/13/2020 Update:
Watch is still working great with no issues whatsoever. Battery level still at “high” and no issues with the new resin band. Loving the watch and very happy to not need
to change batteries once in the 3+ years of ownership. Definitely a must have

“ker & amateur outsdoorsman. I wanted a watch that shows Sunrise/Sunset times, compass navigation, temperature, altitude reader, & barometer all while solar powered. Sounds like the complete ticket.

But it is & isn’t. All the functions work, kind of.

I have trouble with accurate sunset/rise times. It has ‘a’ city for each time zone basically, so if you are somewhere between those 2 cities your sunset/rise time will be off. If you don’t have your exact coordinates when you are going to need it then it is kind of useless unless you just want a rough estimate.

I would have thought the compass to be the most basic function of the watch outside from keeping time, but that would be a mistake. It recommends to calibrate it before using it. Not as in calibrate when you first get the watch but calibrate it each time you use it. Most of the functions want you to do this as well. I feel that if I am recalibrating something that needs to be accurate I don’t have faith in a digital instrument to be correct. Especially when I find that the other instruments are often incorrect.

The altitude reader I found to be the most disappointing feature in accuracy, yet the most useful still. I would calibrate my watch while standing infront of a sign saying my current altitude (such as at a peak) only for my watch to be off a couple hundred feet. I did find that the altitude tracker to be pretty accurate when ascending/descending which I found very useful. Even if the exact altitude was off I was still able to track my progress and know how far back down hill I had to go after reaching the top. Knowing I can use this feature saved this watch from being a complete bust.

The barometer I haven’t used as much. I did see it trending in a direction which indicated good or bad weather, but I forgot which way was which and need to re-read this mechanism. It does have some issues if you are inside or in a vehicle traveling and also changing altitudes (which confused me if this is useful while hiking on a hillside).

The thermometer is by far the least useful item on this watch. It picks up your body heat and never gives you an accurate reading. Keep it off your body and wrist if you want a shot at getting a real temp.

Overall I think it has great potential, but lacks accuracy. I like the watch style and even had some compliments regarding it. Wish all the bells and whistles worked a bit better and this would be my dream watch for being outdoors. I still will bring it with me until I find a better one.

I’ve had this watch for just about 1 year and it has been great. I get tons of compliments on how great it looks. However, recently the large numbers in the bottom window have started to fade. 5-star watch with a 1-star band. The watch is great. I won’t review it point by point as there are multiple accurate reviews here that cover it in some detail. [expand title=”… Read More”]
“d casio waveceptor, which was (is) a great watch but which sometimes took a bit longer to sync, depending on where you were/what you were doing at sync time. This new rangeman seems to sync almost every night at 0:03 no matter what I’m doing or where I am. (I live in Dayton, Ohio.). So why the 3-star rating? — the strap *sucks* thanks to the totally dysfunctional metal keeper. Several others have noted it as a “”minor”” annoyance, which it is, considering the watch itself is very functional, as advertised, but seeing as you WILL be repositioning this ‘effin keeper 5-to-50 times a day (or somewhere’s thereabouts,) there comes a time at which you have to ask at what point does a minor annoyance become a genuine pain in the butt? If the extra length of strap flapping about doesn’t bother you, then by all means buy the watch; it’s a great watch and I think you’ll like it. But if (like me) small, continuous annoyances become bothersome, then you might wanna think about it.
I like the watch enough – a lot – that if casio offered a replacement band with a rubber keeper I’d have just ordered it and not written a slightly negative review, but to the best of my knowledge they don’t. (If anyone has found a god-looking and functional replacement *please* post and let me know; will get one forthwith. Thx,

Bottom Line: great watch; good-looking, functional, and does everything it’s supposed to, as advertised. Crap band that is as dysfunctional as the watch is functional. Might annoy you a lot.

P.S. One other thing: this watch is advertised a couple places as “”stainless steel.”” It ISN’T! Has a resin case and stainless-steel back only. Which IMHO is better, but just be aware.

EDIT UPDATE 12/2/14: I must change my review from “”5-star watch; 3-star band to 1-star and 1-star respectively, as the sync function no longer functions well at all. Since 11/2/14 the watch has managed TWO auto-syncs; I have in that time managed to force three manual syncs, but those three manual syncs took in excess of (70) eight-step manual sync procedures. Totally unacceptable.
I spoke to Casio customer support who advised me they’d been made aware that “”some”” casio watches were having “”difficulty”” syncing since daylight-savings fallback day (Nov 2nd), but beyond that all they could suggest was send it back to Casio (all shipping/insurance paid by me, of course). Amazon best price when I purchased in August this year was $245; not cheap. Pay to ship/insure back to manufacturer after just under 3 months? Bah humbug …
The watch of course keeps excellent (non-synced) time just based on the Quartz-drive mechanism but big deal; so does any $20 drug-store Quartz timex. All the many other excellent features of the watch function within stated parameters exactly as they’re supposed to, but for me AUTO-SYNC RADIO CONTROL TIMEKEEPING was the primary requirement; all other features came in order of descending importance. Hence, sad to say, if I had it to do over again I would NOT buy this watch.

BOTTOM LINE: Maybe I just got a bad one, who knows? I should note my 8-year old wave-ceptor also seems to have more “”difficulty”” now syncing than it did before, although it STILL syncs better than my newer Rangeman. Maybe a Casio-wide sync problem or just in certain parts of the country or sumpthin’ ? Dunno … Caveat emptor I suppose.

P.S. Sorry forgot to mention the auto daylight-savings switch function doesn’t work either. Instead of falling back automatically on 11/2 just kept ticking merrily along an hour ahead of time. Casio customer service remedy: “” …Just turn DST off; it’ll go back to where it should be…””). oh goody lol …

” On another watch that perforated part was blank. One didn’t have a manual, which is fairly thick due to the different languages included.

All of the watches had the protective wrapping you would expect. The metal ones were easy to resize. All four came in identical boxes. The exterior box is flimsy and opens on both the top and bottom (why), and it’s hard to tell the top from the bottom, so easy for your watch to fall right out upon opening.

Three of the watches came in poly bags, which is an inferior way to ship these boxes.

Did I get authentic watches? I don’t know, but they look authentic and I’m likely keeping them.
